Family name origins & meanings
- Japanese : ‘stony rice paddy’; variously written. One family comes from Iwata-mura in Chichibu-gun, Musashi (now part of western Tōkyō). Another family is descended from the Sugawara family of Chikugo (now part of Saga prefecture).
