Family name origins & meanings

  • Japanese : ‘stone well’ or ‘resides in a stony place’, depending on the characters; a common place name. The first is found as a surname in western Japan, the second is more common in eastern Japan. Both are related to the name Ishii, which has similar meanings. In the Ryūkyūan island of Amami, the name is written with the character for ‘celebrate’.
