- Italian : from the personal name Ippolito (classical Greek Hippolytos, composed of the elements hippos ‘horse’ + lyein ‘loose’, ‘release’). This was the name of various minor early Christian saints. (In classical mythology Hippolytos was a young man who rejected the incestuous advances of his stepmother Phaedra.)
