Family name origins & meanings

  • Southern Italian : from a reduced form of Ingarao, composed of a Germanic personal name equivalent to Gerald, which was imported from Catalonia and Aragón in the form Garau with the addition of either the southern Italian prefix in- ‘belonging to the family of’ (see Imbimbo) or Catalan en ‘lord’ (form of address).
