Family name origins & meanings

  • North German : from Middle Low German hūs ‘house’ (see House 1), which may also refer to an important building such as the town hall, a castle, or a manor house, so that the name would indicate dwelling in close proximity to these, or perhaps it is an epithet for a servant who worked at a great house.
