Family name origins & meanings

  • Probably a translation of Italian Santacroce, Spanish Santa Cruz or some other southern European habitational name from a place so called, from Italian, Spanish santa ‘holy’ + croce (Italian), cruz (Spanish) ‘cross’.
  • There are a few places in England called Holy Cross (in County Durham, Tyne and Wear, Herefordshire), and so the surname could be an English habitational name from any of these places; however, it is not found in England.
