Family name origins & meanings

  • English : probably a variant of Halston, which is partly a habitational name from Halston in Shropshire, possibly named with the Old English personal name Ealh + tūn ‘settlement’, and partly derived from the Old Norse personal name Halsteinn. Alternatively, it may perhaps be a habitational name from Holstone in County Durham, so named from Old English hol ‘hollow’ + stān ‘stone’.
  • Possibly an Americanized form of Holstein.
