  • German and Jewish (Ashkenazic) : habitational name from any of several places named Hirschberg, from Middle High German hirz ‘deer’, ‘stag’ + berg ‘hill’, ‘mountain’, for example in Thuringia, North Rhine-Westphalia, or in western Poland (Jelenia Góra). In some instances the German surname may be topographic, from the same elements.
  • Jewish (Ashkenazic) : ornamental name composed of German Hirsch ‘deer’ + Berg ‘mountain’, ‘hill’ (see 1 above).
