Gaelic Ó hÉignigh, ‘descendant of Éigneach’, a
byname meaning ‘forceful’. The surname has often been simplified as
Ó hÉinigh and Anglicized as Heaney or Bird,
the latter because of the similarity to éan ‘bird’.
