Family name origins & meanings

  • German : from handlos, literally ‘handless’, hence presumably a nickname for someone who had lost one or both of his hands.
  • German : status name for a feudal tenant, who paid the so-called hant-loese ‘hand fee’ for a noninheritable fief given to him for life; from Middle High German hant ‘hand’ + lœse ‘redemption in cash’.
