Family name origins & meanings

  • English (Gloucestershire) : habitational name from Hawling in Gloucestershire or possibly from Halling in Kent. Halling was named in Old English as ‘family or followers of a man called Heall’; Hawling may have the same etymology or it may have meant ‘people from Hallow’ (a place in Worcestershire named in Old English with halh + haga ‘enclosure’), or ‘people at the nook of land’, Old English halh (see Hale 1).
  • German : variant of Häling (see Haling).
