  • French : metonymic occupational name for a fuller, from Old Picard grumet ‘oats’, which were used in the fulling process.
  • German and Jewish (Ashkenazic) : respectively from Middle High German gruonmāt, modern German Grummet ‘aftermath’, ‘second cut (of grass for hay)’. As a German name it is an occupational nickname for a mower; as a Jewish name it is of ornamental origin.
