  • Polish, Slovak, and Czech (Moravian) : occupational name from the vocabulary word gazda ‘highland farmer’, ‘uplander’.
  • Hungarian : status name from the vocabulary word gazda ‘farmer’, in particular a relatively well-off smallholder. The word is of Slavic origin, as in 1 above, but the meaning in Hungarian is different.
