  • Norwegian : habitational name from any of several farmsteads so named. The first element is from either of two personal names (Gaute or Old Norse Guðrekr, a compound of guð ‘god’ + rekr ‘powerful’), or possibly a river name. The second element is Old Norse staðr ‘farmstead’.
