Family name origins & meanings

  • French (Normandy and Picardy) : from a Germanic name of uncertain origin. The first element is probably the tribal name Gaut (apparently the same as Old English Gēatas, the Scandinavian people to which Beowulf belonged, and also akin to the name of the Goths); the second is berht ‘bright’, ‘famous’.
