- Irish : reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac an Ghallóglaigh, from gallóglach ‘galloglass’. Galloglasses were a class of warriors retained by Irish chieftains. This was formerly a Donegal surname, but is now found mainly in central Ireland.
