Family name origins & meanings

  • Variant spelling of North German Frie(h)ling, a nickname for a serf who had been freed, Middle Low German vrilink, or a habitational name from a place called Frielingen. Alternatively it could be a respelling of South German Frühling meaning ‘spring’, the season (from früh ‘early’ + the suffix -ling denoting affiliation).
