Family name origins & meanings

  • Greek : from Frankos, literally ‘French’ or ‘Frankish’ (see Frank), but applied by extension to all Western Europeans and all Catholics (including ethnic Greek Catholics). In some cases, Frangos is a short form of Greek patronymic surnames such as Frangopoulos ‘son of (the) Frank’, Frangoglou, and compounds such as Frangogiannis ‘Frank John’ (i.e. ‘John the Westerner’ or ‘John the Catholic’), Frangodimitris ‘Dimitri, son of Frank’, and Frangomikhalis ‘Michael, son of Frank’.
