  • German and Jewish (Ashkenazic) : metonymic occupational name for a maker of flasks and bottles, from Middle High German vlasche, Yiddish flash ‘bottle’, ‘flask’. For the ordinary households of the Middle Ages, bottles were made more often from leather than glass, but also sometimes from wood and metal.
