  • Altered spelling of German Pfahler, Pfähler from Middle High German pfāl ‘stake’, ‘post’, an early loan word from Latin palus. It was a topographic name for someone who lived near a post marking the village boundary, or just outside a city wall; or alternatively an occupational name for a postmaker.
