Family name origins & meanings

  • Aragonese and Spanish (Estupiñán, also Estopiñán, Estopañán) : habitational name from Estopiñán d’o Castiello, in Uesca province, Aragon.
  • In the late 15th century the family migrated from Aragon in northeastern Spain to Jerez de la Frontera in the south, and from there to the Canary Islands. During the 1600s one descendant went to Guatemala, and his son Antonio moved to Mexico in about 1636. Lorenzo Estopinan was living in Lima, Peru, as early as 1565.
