Family name origins & meanings

  • North German (Düe) : from the Germanic personal name Dudo, which is of uncertain derivation. In some cases it is said to be a pet form of the compound name Liudolf (composed of Old Saxon liud ‘people’, ‘tribe’ + wolf ‘wolf’); in other cases it may be a derivative of Germanic theud ‘people’, ‘race’.
  • Danish : from due ‘pigeon’, ‘dove’, applied as a metonymic occupational name for a dove keeper or as a nickname.
  • In some cases, perhaps an altered form of French Ledoux.
  • Possibly a variant of Welsh Dewey.
