Family name origins & meanings

  • French : topographic name from Old French breuil ‘marshy woodland’ (Late Latin brogilum, of Gaulish origin). In French the term later came to mean ‘enclosed woodland’ and then ‘cleared woodland’, and both these senses may also be reflected in the surname.
