Family name origins & meanings

  • Probably of Dutch origin, an altered form of Doelhoff, a habitational name from a place named with doel ‘target’ + hof ‘farmstead’, ‘manor farm’, ‘courtyard’. This could also have been a name for someone in charge of a firing range.
  • The surname was brought to America before 1674 by Christian Dolloff (born c.1639, died 18 August 1708 in Exeter, Rockingham County, NH). His origins are a mystery. 10 October 1674 is the date of his marriage.
