  • Hungarian (Deák) : occupational or status name for a notary, scholar, priest teacher, or someone who could write in medieval Latin, deák. In old Hungarian texts the word deák refers to the Latin language, which was officially used in Hungary both in secular and ecclesiastical writing as late as the 18th century. The surname is also found in Austria, where it is sometimes spelled Deack.
  • Possibly an Americanized spelling of German Dieck.
