Family name origins & meanings

  • Dutch : from Middle Dutch keiser ‘leader’ (from the Latin imperial title Caesar), preceded by the definite article de. The surname may have originated as a nickname, possibly for someone with an overbearing manner. Debrabandere suggests it may have arisen from the title of the leader of a company of marksmen, or from a house or tavern name.
