  • French : nickname, originally d’Avout, for someone who was born in the month of August (Old French auoust, from Latin (mensis) Augustus, from the name of the first Roman emperor), or who owed a feudal obligation to help with the harvest in that month.
  • There was a Jacques Daoust from Normandy, France, in Montreal in 1666; and a Guillaume from Picardy, who married in Lachine in 1686.
