  • English : affectionate nickname or term of address, from Middle English deinteth ‘pleasure’, ‘tidbit’ (Old French deintiet, from Latin dignitas ‘worth’, ‘value’). The word was also used as an adjective in the later form deinte (Old French deint(i)é) in the sense ‘fine’, ‘handsome’, ‘pleasant’.
