Family name origins & meanings

  • Chinese : from the place name Cui, in present-day Shandong province. In the 11th century bc, the eldest son of Ding, Duke of Qi (see Ting) abdicated his right of succession and moved to the area of Cui in present-day Shandong province. His descendants eventually adopted the place name Cui as their surname.
