Family name origins & meanings

  • Americanized spelling of German Krebs.
  • Perhaps an altered spelling of Dutch Craps, which in part represents a patronymic from Krabbe and in part is derived from Middle Dutch crappe ‘madder’, a plant used to produce a red dye, and hence a metonymic occupational name for a dyer or for someone who grew madder.
