  • Portuguese : habitational name from any of numerous places so named or named with couto ‘enclosed pasture’ (Late Latin cautum, from the past participle of cavere ‘to make safe’). In some cases the name may be topographic.
  • Possibly an altered spelling of French Couteau (see Coutu).
