Family name origins & meanings

  • Possibly an altered spelling of Dutch Corsen, attested in records of New Netherland, or perhaps an altered spelling of the French habitational names Courson or Coursan, from either of two places so called, in Aude and Aube, both named for a Romano-Gallic landlord Curtenus (a derivative of Latin curtus ‘short’) + the locative suffix -anum.
