Family name origins & meanings

  • Italian : from gonfalone ‘standard’, ‘banner’, from Old French gonfalon (of Germanic origin), a metonymic occupational name for a standard bearer, either in a military context or as the officer of a guild responsible for carrying the banner in religious processions. It was also a title borne by mayors of the Florentine republic, and by other magistrates designated more specifically as gonfalonieri di giustizia ‘officers of justice’, gonfalonieri della chiesa ‘officers of the church’, etc.
