  • English : habitational name, possibly from Cogill in Aysgarth, North Yorkshire, which is named with Old English cot ‘cottage’ + Old Norse kelda ‘spring’, or perhaps from any of the numerous places named Cowgill or Cow Gill (see Cowgill).
