Family name origins & meanings

  • Polish (Chruściel) : nickname from chruściel ‘corncrake’, a bird with speckled plumage and reddish wings inhabiting fields and meadows. The Polish word is ultimately derived from Slavic chrust- ‘to rustle’, and so is cognate with Russian khrushch ‘cockchafer’.
