  • Italian : from the personal name Chirico, Latin Cyriacus or Quiricus, Greek Kyriakos (see Cyr), a personal name of the early Christian era, an adjectival form meaning ‘of the Lord’. There may have been some confusion with church Latin clericus ‘cleric’ (Italian chierico).
