Family name origins & meanings

  • English : habitational name from Charnock Richard or Heath Charnock in southern Lancashire, which are probably named with a derivative of Celtic carn ‘cairn’, ‘pile of stones’ (see Cairns).
  • Perhaps also an Americanized spelling of Polish Czarnoch, a nickname for a dark-haired person, from Polish czarny ‘black’, or possibly of German Scharnack or Tschernak, nicknames from a Slavic word with the same meaning.
