Family name origins & meanings

  • Probably an altered spelling of the English surname Bullick, probably a habitational name from Bolwick in Norfolk or Bulwick in Northamptonshire, named with Old English bula ‘bull’ + wīc ‘outlying settlement’. The surname is now found mainly in northern Ireland.
  • Perhaps an Americanized form of Serbian and Croatian Bulić, which is either a patronymic from a personal name such as Budimir or possibly a derivative of the old nickname bula, pejorative term for a Muslim woman in areas of former Turkish occupation in the Balkans.
  • Altered spelling of Polish Bulik (see Bula).
