  • French and English : ethnic name for a Breton, from Old French bret (oblique case breton) (see Brett).
  • A bearer of the surname Breton from the Poitou region of France was recorded in Quebec city in 1668. Another, from Normandy, was documented in Champlain, also in 1668; and a third, also called Lebreton and Lardoise, from Brittany, is recorded in Château Richer in 1687.
