Family name origins & meanings

  • German (Brändlinger) : topographic name for someone who lived near a burned area of a forest or town. Since fire was a great threat in the Middle Ages this name may also have been a derisive nickname for a presumed arsonist, in which case the suffix -linger is to be understood as an intensifying agent suffix.
