- Possibly an altered spelling of the Dutch surname Boorts, which Debrabandere suggests may be a hypercorrected form of Boots (see Boot). Alternatively, it may be an Americanized spelling of German Burtz, a nickname for a little man, from the base form of the word Bürzel ‘rump’, ‘stump’.
