Family name origins & meanings

  • Italian : from a nickname composed of the elements bona ‘good’ + donna ‘woman’. In some instances the first element may be the medieval feminine personal name Bona (which is still used in Sardinia); the name was bestowed as an augural or well-wishing name (that the child would grow to be a good woman).
