Family name origins & meanings

  • Czech (Bezděk) : probably from the adverb bezděky ‘involuntarily’, ‘unintentionally’, possibly in the sense ‘carefree’, ‘untroubled’. The application as a surname is not clear. There are several place names in the Czech lands formed with this element, and although the surname is not a habitational name in form, it may nevertheless be derived from one of these. Moldanová cites a certain Jan Bezděcký from Bezděčí Hora, recorded in 1576.
