Family name origins & meanings

  • French (of Norman origin) : from a diminutive of Berger. The name is common in both New England and LA.
  • A bearer of the name is documented in Lauzon, Quebec, in 1673. Another, from the Poitou region of France, is recorded in Trois Rivières, Quebec, in 1676; and a third, from Gascony, was documented in Quebec city in 1698. The LA families are descendants of a Jean-Baptiste Bergeron from IL, who was in New Orleans by 1725. A French soldier, Guillaume Bergeron (also called St. Onge), was in LA by 1740. Several Acadian families of this name settled in LA after the dispersal of 1755.
