- French : variant of Occitan Baumier, a topographic name meaning ‘person who lives in a cave’, from baume, Occitan form of balme ‘cave’.
- A Beaumier from the Poitou region of France arrived in Quebec city in 1665, where the name is common today. In the mid 19th century it was Americanized as Beauman in southern IL by Doric François Beaumier (Doric Frank Beauman), who was born in Trois Rivières, Quebec.
