Family name origins & meanings

  • French : evidently a complimentary nickname formed from a combination of beau ‘fine’, ‘handsome’ + bien ‘well’.
  • In New France this was a secondary surname for Trotier or Trottier. A bearer from the Perche region of France is documented in Quebec city in 1646. Beaubien was apparently used as a primary name for the first time in 1742 in Detroit.
