  • Italian (Lombardy and Venetia) : also Jewish (from Italy): habitational name from any of numerous places in northeastern and central Italy named with this word, including Bassano del Grappa (Vicenza), Bassano Bresciano (Brescia), San Bassano (Cremona), and Bassano Romano (Viterbo), which had a large Jewish community.
  • Italian (Lombardy and Venetia) : from the personal name Bassano, a derivative of basso ‘low’, ‘short in stature’, Latin bassus ‘thickset’ (see Basso). The name was popularized by the cult of St. Bassano, a contemporary of St. Ambrose of Milan.
