Family name origins & meanings

  • Spanish (Arreguín; of Basque origin) : variant of Arreguí, Spanish spelling of Basque Arregi, which clearly contains the Basque word arri ‘stone’. This is either an occupational name for a stonecutter (with the agent suffix -gin), or a topographic name for someone who lived on stony ground (with the locative suffix -egi) or on a stony slope (with egi ‘slope’).
