Family name origins & meanings

  • Southern Italian : variant of Arcudi, which is from the Greek personal name Arcadio (Latin Arcadius), conflated by folk etymology with modern Greek arkouda ‘bear’ (classical Greek arktos). There were several Saints Arcadius, including a fourth-century Mauretanian martyr, a fifth-century Spanish martyr, and a sixth-century French bishop. The name Arcadius (Arkadios) originally denoted someone from the region of Arcadia in the Peloponnese.
