Family name origins & meanings

  • German : apparently from the vocabulary word Abendrot(h) ‘sunset’, but in many if not all cases actually a folk-etymological alteration of the habitational name Appenrodt or Appenroth, from any of several places in northern Germany which are so named from the personal name Aben + Middle German rot ‘cleared land’.
  • Jewish (Ashkenazic) : ornamental name from German Abendroth ‘sunset’, literally ‘evening red’. Compare Morgenstern.
